It is the Government’s plan to deliver a National Flag and a copy of the 1916 Proclamation to every Primary School in the country. This is a key initiative of the Centenary Programme and will see teams from Óglaigh na hÉireann, the Defence Forces, visit some 3,300 schools across the country, including Special Schools, Gaeilscoileanna and schools on our islands. This will all culminate in Proclamation Day on 15th March 2016, which has been set aside by the Department of Education as a special day to focus on the 1916 Proclamation and the raising of our National Flag.
On Friday 18th September two members of the army delivered a National Flag to our school.
The whole school gathered in the gym-hall
Lieutenant Stephen Cunningham and Sergeant Amy Hopkins introduced the event. Sergeant Hopkins spoke about The Proclamation. She then read The Proclamation with a section read by Adam Ralph & Mikey Cunningham.
The soldiers spoke about the flag, what the colours meant and how to care for it.
The flag was then presented to Shane Doyle and Sonia Gibbons.
The Proclamation was presented to Sonia Gibbons.
There followed a question and answer session then during which we all learned a great deal about what it means to be part of the Defence Forces.
